This paper summarizes factors which can affect the pH, volatile
fatty acid concentration and proportions of the individual acids in the
rumen liquor of dairy cattle. These factors are discussed in relation to
experimental techniques.
New Zealand data on the proportions of the volatile fatty acids in the
rumen liquor of sheep and cattle fed pasture are presented and discussed
in relation to milk composition and the efficiency of milk secretion
with dairy cattle.
