A group of 80 lambs sent by road and rail transport from Manutuke (Gisborne) to the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre lost 11 lb of liveweight in transit and during pre-slaughter fastings. Information was available which was used to estimate that these lambs had lost 1.7 lb of carcass weight more than 172 lambs from the same original group which had been slaughtered at a commercial freezing works after being fasted for approximately 25 hours. The importance in commercial practice of live (and carcass) weight loss due to pre-slaughter Fasting is discussed.
