Regulation of ruminant digestion is a complex multifactorial
process which classical experimental methods have not been able to
unravel. This paper describes how modelling and simulation techniques
have been used to support a research programme in this area. A model of
cellulose digestion in the rumen is detailed and efforts to evaluate the
modelling approach are described. Considerable progress has been made in
formalizing and integrating ideas in line with current concepts of rumen
digestion, evaluating deficiencies in the literature, and identifying
many areas where experiments are required.
