A range of forage sources and a range of cow feeding options
were defined and assembled as a linear programming model to synthesize
and evaluate alternative North Island dairy systems and to develop
research priorities. Forage crops significantly increased production
and average and minimum income in Northland systems but had a much
smaller effect on Ruakura system. Average profitability was increased
only slightly by conservation. The most rewarding research area would
be to increase pasture yield.
