Changes in shape of the femur and the m. semitendinosus
occurring with developmental growth are described. It is shown that
three-quarters of growth in muscle volume is consequent upon growth in
length of bone, while shape changes in muscle account for only one
quarter of growth in muscle volume. Attention to the role of bone is
necessary in studies of muscle protein synthesis and muscle growth.
