Mineral Requirements and Managing Deficiencies in Grazing Ruminants

Occasional Publication No. 15 (2009)

Since its release in 1983, Occasional Publication No.9 "The Mineral Requirements of Grazing Ruminants" has been a popular and useful resource for farm management in New Zealand. Our understanding of animal physiology, nutritional biochemistry, and methods of diagnosis and prevention of mineral deficiencies have advanced considerably since then and it is timely to update and revise the subject.

Occasional Publication No.15 "Mineral Requirements and Managing Deficiencies in Grazing Ruminants" is a comprehensive, scholarly reference work focused on local pastoral grazing systems. Its 22 chapters collect and summarise the data of hundreds of animal studies into a concise format that can be understood and implemented by the veterinarians, farmers, consultants and students directly responsible for making New Zealand agriculture successful. That information underpins recommendations for diagnosis and supplementation strategies. Veterinarians and consultants can now provide sound advice to their clients and counter any misleading information concerning the mineral nutrition of livestock. Farmers can be assured that, among well-cared for animals, mineral nutrition will not be a limiting factor in production and profits.

OP14Pasture and Supplements for Grazing Animals

Occasional Publication No. 14 (2007)
edited by PV Rattray, IM Brooks & AM Nicol
Table of contents

An up-to-date review of the pasture and supplementary feed resources available to the New Zealand pastoral livestock industry, and the energy and protein requirements of these livestock. The interactions between animals and their feed resources ultimately determine both the quantity and quality of the feed consumed and thus the level of animal production. An understanding of this area is key to the successful allocation of feed resources. Although the principles discussed in the early chapters are common to all grazing animals, certain aspects of their application are species or system specific, and chapters address these issues. The environmental impact of grazing pastures and supplementing grazing animals is also addressed.
