...today's research to satisfy the markets of tomorrow. The New Zealand
Society of Animal Production has been the major NZ forum for the presentation of
research results on farmed animals including: sheep, cattle, dairy, deer and
goats for over 50 year's. Over 520 farmers, farm advisors, veterinarians,
scientists and university students are members of the Society.
The purpose of the Award
is to recognise an outstanding individual or joint contribution made
to New Zealand animal production and/or the Society, during the previous
five years.
It is intended that this
Award should be the most prestigious award given by the Society. Preference
will be given to recognition of one individual or a few individuals
in a joint award, rather than large teams.
The intention is to make
a distinction between the Award and Honorary Life Membership and that
the award be interpreted to encompass the activities of the membership
in the broadest sense.
NAME AND FORM OF THE AWARD
The Award will be called
the McMeekan Memorial Award, in honour of the name of a foundation member,
past president, life member and distinguished leader in animal production,
research and administration in New Zealand and the world.
The form of the Award shall
be determined by the Management committee but will include an appropriate
memento selected and retained by the recipient and a certificate.
The total value of the award will be $500, a sum which will be reviewed
by the Management Committee and, if necessary, adjusted every 5 years.
A photograph of the recipient
and inscription showing the name of the recipient, year of award and
a brief citation of approximately 30 words, will be hung in the McMeekan
Centre at Ruakura.
Travel expenses will be
given to the awardee (only) to attend the presentation at the annual
Conference.
NOMINATIONS
The Society's Secretary will call for nominations for the Award
at the same time as the call for abstracts of papers for presentation
at the Society's next annual Conference. Closing date for nominations
will be 1 March for years in which the annual conference is held in
June and 30 September for years in which the conference is held in February.
For details on conference dates, see the conference information pages.
Each nomination must be signed by two currently financial members
of the Society and must contain documented evidence of the way or ways
in which the nominee has fulfilled the objectives of the Award specifically
as in relation to criteria outlined in 3 (iv) and (v).
A potential recipient need not be a current member of the Society.
Each nomination should identify how the nominee's efforts have
made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand animal production and/or
the Society during the five years before the nomination.
The phrase "during the previous five years" is a critical
aspect of the Award and the documentation accompanying the nomination
must focus on this aspect of the nominee's career.
The Management Committee, or a sub-committee of it, will judge
(by a majority vote) a nominee's suitability as a recipient of the Award.
Each nomination will be considered for the Award in three consecutive
years unless the nominee becomes the recipient of the Award during the
three year period. Unsuccessful nominations, within the three year period,
may be updated but the period of eligibility is not extended.
The Management Committee will only make an award when, in their
opinion, a nominee is a worthy recipient, based on the information present
in the nomination.
New nomination for unsuccessful previous nominees must be for endeavours
leading to a new contribution clearly different from that of previous
nomination(s).
The proposer of the nomination should be advised by the Secretary
of the Management Committee's decision with regard to that particular
nomination. A proposer, for an unsuccessful nomination, should also
be informed of the opportunity to update the nomination subject to 3(vii).
For a successful nomination, the President is responsible for the
following :
To the nominee :
Invite the nominee to accept the Award. Enclose a cheque and ask
the recipient to purchase an appropriate memento to the approximate
value of the cheque, and bring the memento to the presentation.
Provide background information on the Award.
Offer an invitation to reply to the oration.
Note that NZSAP will cover the cost of accommodation at the Conference
venue for the nominee.
To the proposer :
Obtain a list of selected guests to invite to the presentation (but
at no cost to NZSAP).
Ensure copies of the oration have been delivered to the Society's Publicity
Officer (2 copies) and Editor (2 copies) before the Conference (see 4(iv)).
To the invited guests :
Invite them to attend the presentation of the Award and offer any non-members
among them the opportunity to attend the Conference.
The Publicity Officer is responsible for the arrangement of a recent photograph and appropriate inscription as in 2(iii).
PRESENTATION
The Award will be presented by the Society's President (or nominee) to the recipient.
The Award presentation will take place preferably during the Society's annual Conference.
The presentation will be made after an appropriate oration which
will summarise the nature of the recipient's contribution. This oration
may be prepared and/or presented by the President or his/her nominee.
The person preparing the oration is responsible for providing two
copies to the Society's Publicity Officer and two copies to the Society's
Editor prior to the conference.
The oration will be published in the Proceedings of the Society
in a form acceptable to the Society's Editor.
The name of each recipient will be recorded in a list published
in each Proceedings.
AWARD FUNDS
The award will be made from the Awards' Fund established from the interest
accruing from the Society's investments.
